Besides your desire to discover sumptuous landscapes and to relax on the charming beaches of the island, you also want to learn a little more about the history of this island, a history in which slavery had a very important role.

About monuments, symbol of the island’s past

Many monuments relate the history of Martinique. Easily accessible with your rental car, they are a true testimony to the Martinican past.

To the North, the ruins of the ancient town of Saint Pierre, destroyed in 1902 by the eruption of Mount Pelee, where you can climb the steps of the old theatre, or visit the dungeon of Cyparis, the only survivor of the disaster.

Also visit the Domaine de la Pagerie in Trois Ilets, a historic and architectural major place, the birthplace of the future Empress Josephine, the first wife of Emperor Napoleon Ist.

Discover the "Cap 110 Memorial" at Anse Cafard at Diamant, in the southwest of the island. This war memorial is made up of 15 white statues erected in these places to pay homage to the 174 missing from the famous shipwreck of 1830.

About slavery

To learn a little more about this awful time and understand the Martinican past, go to La Savane des Esclaves in Trois-Îlets in the southwest of the island.

You will learn more about the life of slaves in the plantations and especially the famous Creole gardens.
